YVR expecting 78,000 travellers moving through the airport every day over the holidays

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – It’s about to get very busy at YVR, with about 78,000 holiday travellers — and sometimes, more — moving through the airport every single day.

The busiest times for the airport are right after school wraps up for the holidays and the week after Christmas. The airport anticipates 83,000 arrivals and departures each day during those peak times.

We hear this tip from the airport year-round, but it applies double during the holidays: Give yourself plenty of extra time to get where you’re going.

“Remember to build in some extra time just to get to the airport itself,” says Reg Krake with the airport. “[To be] stress-free, really, that starts right at home.”

Don’t bring wrapped gifts in your carry-on bag, as airport security might just unwrap them. And remember: The 100 mL limit on carry-on liquids applies to everything — even snow globes.

Mathieu Larocque with CATSA notes there are new rules about electronic devices. “[Passengers] may have to take the electronic item out of its carrying case and demonstrate that it can be powered up.”

There is also a new, inorganic powder carry-on limit of 350 mL. So, if you’re giving someone bath salts for Christmas, you might have to check it.

For its part, YVR has brought in a couple of new high-capacity security stations and entertainment both before and after check-in.
