Surrey RCMP looks to identify suspects in Hockey Shop fire

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Close to three months after a large fire shut down a prominent hockey shop in Surrey, Mounties are releasing photos of two people they believe may be connected to the blaze.

“Investigators from our serious crime unit have since discovered, with assistance from the fire department that it was in fact intentionally set and is now considered to be an arson,” explains Corporal Scotty Schumann with Surrey RCMP. “Investigators have obtained surveillance photos of a man and a woman that are alleged to be suspects in this arson.”

Schumann says there’s no word on a motive at this point, but are hoping to narrow down possibilities once the pair is identified.

“We’ve had the photos for some time now but we’ve been diligent in trying to identify these people internally. It’s certainly to police’s benefit not to have the suspects know that we’re looking at them, but we’ve been unable to identify them so far and so now we’re reaching out for the public’s assistance.”

The Hockey Shop Source for Sports has been a go-to spot for all hockey-related needs for many in the region, and Schumann says the fire took a large toll.

“Although there were no injuries to report, this crime has greatly affected the hockey community here in Surrey and across the Lower Mainland. If you recognize either of these two suspects, investigators want to hear from you right away.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 and quote file #2017-135528. You can also contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or www.solvecrime.ca.
