VPD issues public warning after sex assault

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver Police are urging caution after a woman was sexually assaulted by a stranger Wednesday night.

Investigators say it happened around 8:30 p.m. near Everett Crowley Park in southeast Vancouver. A woman, who is in her 20s, was walking on Matheson Crescent on the east side of the park when the suspect came up behind her with a knife, pushed her into the bushes and assaulted her. A couple out walking their dog was able to stop the attack and scare the man off.

“We are thankful that this couple were there to help stop the assault,” says Constable Jason Doucette. “They stayed with the victim to ensure her safety and even helped her get home. Unfortunately, we haven’t had an opportunity to speak with them, as we don’t even know their names. It’s very important to our investigation that they come forward.”

The suspect is described as a white man between 20 to 40 years old. He is between 5’6” and 5’7” tall, and weighs around 170 lbs. with an athletic build. He was wearing all black and had his face covered at the time of the attack.

If you were in the area around that time or if you have any further information you’re asked to call the VPD’s Sex Crimes Unit at 604-717-0600, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
