Sugar Mountain tent city cleared out: Alliance Against Displacement

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Sugar Mountain tent city has been cleared out and broken up by City of Vancouver workers “wielding heavy machinery”, according to the Alliance Against Displacement.

The group says residents of the East Vancouver homeless camp were given no option but to leave when City crews arrived around 7:00 a.m. on Monday. According to the group, three people were at the site when the decampment took place, leaving another dozen to return to camp and find their belongings gone.

In a statement, the City of Vancouver says the site is now clear, but that the final few people from the encampment moved into shelters last night.

“The City is now cleaning and preparing the site so that construction of the much-needed temporary modular housing can begin immediately after a development permit is granted.”

There was conflict at the Franklin Street site on Friday, when residents of the homeless camp refused to obey an eviction deadline.

Last week, the City said there were safety concerns, including about fires and overdoses, at the site.

The Sugar Mountain tent city was created over summer when residents of the Ten Year Tent City on Main Street were facing eviction.
