Senior citizen in serious condition following altercation

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – An elderly man has been seriously hurt after some sort of an altercation in Vancouver this morning.

It happened outside the Costco on Expo Boulevard near BC Place just after 11 a.m. between the man in his 80s and a 57-year-old man.

“A bit of a shoving match occurred, at least one shove happened and it put the man in his 80s back onto the ground and he unfortunately struck his head,” explains Cst. Jason Doucette with Vancouver Police, who adds passerbys were able to quickly step in and administer first aid before an ambulance arrived. “He was rushed to hospital where he remains in very serious condition.”

The suspect is said to have run away, but was arrested close to two hours later.

Doucette says police were able to identify him through the help of witnesses and information collected at the scene. “[Investigators] worked backwards with the information and were able to locate this man at his residence.”

It’s unclear what prompted the fight, but police are hoping to share more details throughout their investigation.

“The part that we’re very thankful for is that members of the public just didn’t stand by. They rushed to administer first aid and I believe that there was actually some staff from Costco as well that helped out. BC Ambulance arrived and rushed this man to hospital where he’s receiving treatment.”

If you were in the area and witnessed the assault, and have not yet spoken with investigators, you’re asked to call the VPD at 604-717-2541.
