Police look to identify suspect in North Delta attempted arson

DELTA (NEWS 1130) – Police are looking for a person who may have been involved in an attempted arson early Friday morning.

Delta Police say an officer was out on patrol near 82 Avenue and Scott Road in North Delta when he noticed a fire at an apartment complex just after 7 a.m.

“So he called the fire department right away, and immediately started evacuating the residents,” says Cris Leykauf with Delta PD. “There were approximately 12 apartment units in the building, and fortunately all of the residents were safely evacuated, and we have no reports of any injuries.”

She says everyone has been allowed back into their suites, and investigators say damage appears to be isolated to the outside of a business portion of the building.

“Our investigation so far has determined that the fire appears to be deliberately set,” Leykauf explains. “So we’re now looking for possible witnesses and anyone who might be able to help identify the suspect that we released the photo of.”

From images released by the department, police believe they are looking for a man who may be around 6’00” tall.

Leykauf says the DPD has had some luck in the past asking the public for help.

“The public is, especially in the Delta community, they’re absolutely so engaged and really want to be part of keeping this community a safe place, and we find that we often do outreach to the public and they’re very responsive. Keeping the community safe is everyone’s job.”

She adds Scott Road is a fairly busy road, and is hopeful someone who may have seen something will call investigators.
