Rabbits will be encouraged to move as Jericho Beach pier gets an upgrade

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – As the Vancouver Park Board begins the process to renew the pier at Jericho Beach, efforts are underway to save the famous critters that call that area home.

Visitors to Jericho come for the fishing and views from the pier, but they also come to get a glimpse of the rabbits that have made homes in the nearby bushes and log piles.

Animal advocate Laura-Leah Shaw, who keeps an eye on the population there, is confident the bunnies can be moved as construction begins.

“I think we have enough time to remove logs and create other habitat areas. The bunnies will move on their own. We won’t have to physically relocate the families,” she says.

“We are gradually cutting back the existing blackberry and bramble bushes. When you set down logs in other areas, you are encouraging them to move.”

But she points out the rabbits are domesticated, often purchased on an impulse for families during key holidays – then abandoned.

“As much as people love to see them at the park, it’s not the place for them. They’re used to being cuddled and loved. And now they’re abandoned.”

Shaw says just as you would with a pet dog or cat, bunnies should be spayed and neutered.

And if you need to give up your rabbit, Shaw says you should contact the Vancouver Rabbit Rescue & Advocacy, the city pound, or even the BC SPCA.
