Man charged in Surrey shooting

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – One man has been charged with several offences after a shooting in Surrey last weekend.
Police say they were called out on December 23rd at about 8:50 p.m. to a coffee shop at 135th Street and 105 Avenue.

They say a man entered the store and shot another man before taking off. The suspect not only knows the victim but is known by police. The victim was seriously injured and is still recovering.

The Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Unit is leading the investigation and with the help of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, they picked up 34-year-old Son Thai Lu four days after the shooting.

Charges approved by Crown Counsel

  • Attempted murder
  • Aggravated assault
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Pointing a firearm

“The shooting appears to have been motivated by a disagreement between the two men,” says Corporal Scotty Schumann. “There is no known link to the ongoing Lower Mainland gang conflict and we’re thankful no one else was injured.”

Surrey has seen a few dozen reports of shots fired or shootings so far this year.

Anyone with more information about this case is asked to call Surrey RCMP at 604.599.0502 and quote the file #2017-182646. You can also call Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.TIPS.
