RCMP vehicle hits manhole, hydro pole, storefront, before catching fire

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – A stretch of the Fraser Highway near 184th St in Surrey is open again after an unusual crash involving a Lower Mainland RCMP pickup truck.

Sunday morning’s weather may have been a factor when the truck cut an open manhole cover and veered off the road, hitting a hydro pole and then a storefront.

“This is where foggy with visibility was limited. Looks like the vehicle tires dropped into the manhole. Now whether the cover was loose or off, we don’t know,” Staff Sergeant Murray Hedderson says.

The vehicle then caught on fire, and the fire spread to the business. Surrey Fire Department extinguished both fires and BC Hydro attended to assess and repair the damaged pole.

No one was injured. Fraser Highway was partially closed for a short duration but has since reopened.
