Crashes slowing down road work on the Alex Fraser

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – If you regularly drive over the Alex Fraser Bridge, the provincial government is asking you to slow down, as speeders are apparently delaying crews working to make improvements to the crossing.

Workers on the span will sometimes have to be taken off and shifts are cancelled because of crashes, that’s according to Lina Haluani with the Ministry of Transportation.

“The more the traffic abides by the construction, speed zones, and signs on the road and safety of the workers, the more we continue to be on track.”

She adds crews are working as fast as they can. “The contractor is doing [its] best to catch up, of course, when they get slowed down because of an accident on the bridge, they try to compensate it. So far, our indication is still everything is on track and the contractor’s working extremely hard to meet these timelines.”

Mounties say an officer has been assigned to the construction zone while crews are there in the evenings after safety concerns were raised.

The province is adding another counterflow lane and installing metal stoppers on the cables as part of the de-icing system.
