Man arrested, released after attack in Vancouver leaves man injured

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Police are asking for the public’s help following a serious assault late Tuesday night left one man with some serious injuries.

Police say they found a 51-year-old man in medical distress in front of the Astoria Hotel on the city’s Downtown Eastside at about 11:30 p.m. after someone walking by, noticed the unconscious man and called 911. Emergency crews were called to the area of East Hastings Street near Hawkes Avenue and rushed the man to the hospital where he remains in critical condition.

“Based on the information collected so far, it appears the victim had been in physical altercation and may have hit his head as result. The suspect, a 42-year-old Vancouver man, was arrested at the scene and has been released pending further investigation,” says Constable Jason Doucette.

The motive for the attack is unclear.

A few years ago police in Vancouver dealt with a couple of ‘one-punch‘ assaults — investigators are looking into whether this is a similar case.

The VPD’s Major Crime Section is asking for witnesses to come forward or for anyone with video footage to hand it over. If you have any information about this case you are asked to call 604.717.2541 or Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.8477.
