Could BC’s Family Day move to a different weekend next year?

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – We may see Family Day in BC move to a different weekend next year.

In recent months, Premier John Horgan has said he’s open to the idea of moving the annual holiday from the second Monday in February to the third, so it falls in line with similar holidays in other provinces.

Today, he hinted that changes may be in the works for next year.

“Happy Family Day, everybody, and we’ll see when it is next year,” said Horgan to wrap up a news conference today.

He did not offer further details, but Labour Minister Harry Bains is also hinting changes may be in the works.

“There are some businesses saying we should keep it the way it is, but then there are many families and the families actually are saying this is supposed to be for families. If they have relatives across boundaries, they can not get together.”

Bains stresses no decision has been made because they’re still weighing both sides of a possible switch.

Horgan was speaking at a coffee shop in North Vancouver, where he announced BC’s minimum wage will rise to $12.65 per hour this June. The wage will rise to $15.20 per hour by June, 2021, fulfilling a promise made during the last provincial election.
