Investigators say they found the 51-year-old man in medical distress in front of the Astoria Hotel at about 11:30 p.m. last Tuesday after someone walking by East Hastings Street near Hawkes Avenue, noticed the unconscious man and called 911.
The man was rushed to the hospital where he remained in critical condition for a couple of days before passing away on Saturday.
“The victim has been identified as 51-year-old Coquitlam resident Martin James MacDonald,” says Constable Jason Doucette in a statement. “It appears Mr. MacDonald had been in a physical altercation prior to being found at a bus stop.”
The VPD says the suspect, a 42-year-old Vancouver man, was arrested at the scene and released as the investigation continues.
The force’s Major Crime Section is leading the case and it’s asking for anyone with information to call them at 604.717.2500 or Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.8477.
