‘Ignore Premier Horgan’: Calgary’s mayor shares thoughts on pipeline dispute

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi is sharing his thoughts about what Alberta should do in the Trans Mountain pipeline fight with BC.

Alberta has formed a task force to look at more measures it may take against our province, as the BC government has proposed banning increased bitumen imports — a move that would put the pipeline expansion project in jeopardy.

“The right strategy here, is to just ignore Premier Horgan, frankly,” says Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi.

While many of Horgan’s opponents have said him just saying he wants to consult with citizens about restrictions is bad enough, Nenshi points out BC’s premier hasn’t announced any major restrictions yet.

“Nothing he has said should slow down the construction of this pipeline. Full speed ahead. And I believe that the federal government is starting to make noises in that direction.”

Critics argue these consultations could result in illegal and critical delays.

On his trip to South Korea to talk about Olympic strategies, Nenshi says he met with a big Korean company whose refinery is currently getting oil from places like Australia and Saudi Arabia. “Which is much more shipping cost, and they’re anxiously waiting for the opportunity to accept Alberta crude and that creates a new market of us for 50 million people.”

Calgary’s mayor spoke in Ottawa today, as Canada’s big city leaders meet with federal cabinet ministers ahead of the spring budget.
