Uptick in visits to Olympic museum in Richmond following successful Games

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – It seems a lot of people have been inspired by the athletes from last month’s Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, wanting to either whiz down a bobsled track or fly off a ski jump.

Visits have been way up at a local interactive Olympic museum as people imagine having your name announced as the next competitor in an event at the winter or summer Games.

Andrew Clark with the Richmond Olympic Experience, which is located at the Richmond Olympic Oval says staff were expecting at least a 10 per cent jump in the number of people to walk through the doors during and around the time the Games were underway.

“But it was closer probably to 30 to 35 per cent more than we expected. We had a lot of interest from schools who wanted to come through.”

Clark adds he’s hoping and expecting an uptick in the number of people taking part in some of the other programs available at the facility.

“We do definitely expect to see more people coming to the Richmond Olympic Experience. But we also just expect to see more uptick in our general sport, our community sport participation programs as well, as well as our high performance programs.”

Clark adds on Family Day, which was February 12th — a couple of days after the Opening Ceremony, 800 people came through.

Team Canada set a record at these Winter Olympics winning 29 medals (11 gold, eight silver, 10 bronze). The previous high for Canada was 26 medals at the 2010 Games in Vancouver.
