Anti-pipeline activists could delay Trans Mountain expansion for months by saving a few trees

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – By saving a few dozen trees from being chopped down, a group of activists believe they can stall the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion for months, and cost Kinder Morgan hundreds of millions of dollars.

Kinder Morgan has permission to remove trees in the area of Burnaby Mountain in order to dig a tunnel between its Burnaby and Westridge Marine terminals. However, the trees must be down by March 26th, after which protections kick in for migratory birds.

“So if they’re delayed in cutting those trees for three weeks, the boring will be delayed for five months,” says David Mivasair, with an anti-pipeline group calling itself the Justin Trudeau Brigade.

“Preventing the trees from being cut for three weeks could be kind of a linchpin to set back the destruction that they are planning to perpetrate,” he adds.

According to their Facebook page, the Justin Trudeau Brigade is planning protests at the Westridge terminal every day for the rest of the week.
