Coquitlam couple is $500,000 richer after Lotto win

COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – A couple from the Lower Mainland is starting off the weekend just right after cashing in on a Daily Grand lottery win.

Laurie Pedersen from Coquitlam says her husband Leo, who bought the ticket, broke the news. “He asked me to go for lunch, and I was just upstairs getting ready for work,” she says. “I kind of came down and said, ‘you know I don’t know, I brought a really good lunch that’s sitting at the office, I don’t know if I want to go.'”

It was then that she says her husband asked her to check something on the computer. “So I said ‘well I don’t really have time.’ And so he said ‘no, no, you really need to check this.’ So he brings me over the computer and he’s got the lotto numbers up on the screen, and he says ‘I need you to check these numbers for me.'”

It was when she put her glasses on that Laurie says she had to do a double-take, realizing she and her husband had the winning numbers.

Laurie works with BC Ambulance, which is just across the street from the BC lottery office. “So what’s the chances of that,” she says.

The Pedersens matched five out of five numbers on the Daily Grand lottery, only missing the “Grand Number”. They had the option to choose between winning $25,000-a-year for life, or taking a lump sum of half a million dollars.

The couple doesn’t know what they plan to do with their winnings long term. “Short term there’s going to be some shopping and limos involved,” she tells NEWS 1130. “And I think the husband needs to be taken out for a beautiful dinner with a limo, and I’m going to go get my hair done and buy a really nice outfit, and he’s going to be pampered for the next 48 hours.”

As for Leo, he says he plans to enjoy a nice relaxing day on the golf course while the girls shop.

However, a big question remains: why did they choose the lump sum? “I think just because we’re in our 50s, and we just realized that it’s probably the best. You only live once, and who knows how long we’ll be around to be able to celebrate it and enjoy this money with our children.”

The winning ticket was bought at Petro Canada on Johnson Street in Coquitlam.
