Man charged with arson in fire at Surrey’s ‘Hockey Shop’

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – A man has been charged with arson in connection with a fire that destroyed a prominent hockey shop in Surrey.

It happened on September 23, 2017 at the Hockey Shop Source for Sports on City Parkway, next to the North Surrey Rec Centre.

At the time, fire crews believed the fire may have started in some garbage at the back of the store.

Video footage of the fire showed a large plume of smoke billowing into the air.

The damage was severe, but no one was hurt.

Back in December, RCMP released photos of two people they believed may have had connections to the fire.

“The crime greatly affected the hockey community here in Surrey,” says RCMP Cpl. Elenore Sturko

James Haslam of no fixed address has been charged with arson. He’s set to appear in court on March 22.
