PITT MEADOWS (NEWS 1130) – A former Pitt Meadows city councillor has been sentenced to nine months in jail and three years probation for sexually assaulting a teen in the early 90s.
David Murray pleaded not guilty to one count of sexual assault and one count of sexual interference involving a 14-year-old girl.
He resigned from council several days after his conviction in October last year following mounting pressure from the community.
Murray is also subject to a firearms prohibition, and has also been ordered to provide a DNA sample for the national data bank.
Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker previously said he would like to change the rules so councils have more power to remove councillors convicted of crimes. Becker had been criticized for not forcing Murray to step down immediately, with hundreds of people signing a petition calling on the councillor to be removed.
Murray was first elected in 2011.
