Private providers questioning NDP as subsidized child care is about to be rolled out

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – There continue to be questions from daycare providers as the province is set to roll out subsidized child care starting next month.

Suzie Logan is one of the private daycare providers that is still wondering how everything will work.

“None of them have been answered at all. We are just hoping to get some transparency through these programs to understand what this means for us as private child care providers.”

Logan says one of the major questions she has for the premier surrounds making private daycare centres have to ask the province to raise fees.

She says the province is using one example of someone unfairly raising costs to force all private practices to ask the government to raise any rates.

“That’s their historical review. So how is this advantageous for me, who has been fair to parents and operating ethically for years and years — how is this fair for us?”

Horgan’s response to the backlash was simple.

“I don’t apologize for providing the first quality child care program in British Columbia’s history, not at all.”

He says the rollout isn’t perfect.

“A billion dollar investment is undertaken and we are going to have growing pains along the way. We want everyone to be working together on this.”
