S(no)w more winter tires, but watch your speed: VSA

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s that time of year. With the beginning of April, snow tires are no longer required on some of our provinces major routes, starting today.

But maintenance crews say despite the option to drive with all seasons or summer tires, you should still expect to see occasional bursts of surprise weather.

Bob Gilowski with VSA Highway Maintenance isn’t going so far as to say you should keep your winter tires on longer than required by provincial law.

But he says just because you don’t need to have them on your car, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be ready to deal with the odd appearance of snow on routes like the Coquihalla.

“Snow can fall on the Coquihalla 12 months out of the year,” says Gilowski. “This time of the year it’s not unusual, and this time of the year I mean late March, April, it’s not unusual to see snow storms.”

Gilowski points out some the areas where the weather is quite changeable.

“Higher elevation areas include the Coquihalla summit, the Pennask Summit, which is the Okanagan Connector route, and also the Surrey summit which is part of the Coquihalla between Merritt and Kamloops,” says Gilowski.

Gilowski adds you should mind your speed.

He says cars are often properly equipped but people still put themselves in dangerous situations by driving faster than appropriate.
