Man using dating app to defraud people: Police

WEST VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A man is accused of targeting men in West Vancouver, using a dating app in an effort to defraud them.

Police say back in October, two men reported that they were duped out of thousands of dollars by someone identifying themselves as Richard or “Quantum” on the dating app Grindr. That person went on to befriend and offer financial help to the victims.

The victims were apparently told to set up bank accounts and cash cheques provided by that person. They were then asked to share that cash.

The cheques turned out to be fakes and the victims were out over $3,000.

Christian Richardson was arrested on Friday. The 39-year-old faces five charges, including fraud and theft.

West Vancouver Police believe other people may have fallen victim to this scam and are urging anyone who has to call their local detachment.
