Floods, mudslides prompt evacuation orders, alerts in several parts of B.C.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – More than 200 properties across three regional districts in British Columbia are under evacuation orders because of flooding worries.

A total of 74 properties in the Upper Nazko area in danger of flooding and Mounties are going door-to-door to warn people. Anyone already cut off by rising waters will be airlifted to an evacuation centre in Quesnel.

Evacuation orders also remain in effect for 148 properties in the community of Tulameen in the Okanagan-Similkameen Regional District along with several more north of Oliver and nine mostly-vacation homes in Killiney Beach on the northwest side of Okanagan Lake.

The forecast should help, says NEWS 1130 Meteorologist Russ Lacate.

“The Okanagan forecast is virtually rain-free with only spotty showers for the next 24 hours. The temperatures are back to normal in the mid-teens and that will temporarily slow down the snowpack melt. The trend for the BC Southern Interior is towards sunnier, warmer conditions with the mercury reaching the mid-20s again throughout the second half of this week.”

Russ says the pattern will not be complicated by the risk of widespread or heavier downpours, like what we saw over the weekend.

“Similar to what is going on around the Okanagan, the Kootenay District forecast is a bit cooler and somewhat unsettled and showery for the following couple of days but the warm-up does arrive towards the tail-end of this week as temperatures top 20 degrees in the south-east part of the province,” he explains.

“But towards the BC Central Interior, the Cariboo District outlook remains cooler and showery for at least the first three-quarters of this week.”

After a mudslide yesterday, evacuation alerts cover communities in the Central Kootenay Regional District, though there was no major damage.

Meanwhile, the River Forecast Centre has issued a flood warning for the Nazko and West Road rivers. Flood watches are in effect for a number of other waterways around the Cache Creek, Merritt, Williams Lake and Quesnel areas.
