More than 100 evacuation orders in Grand Forks lifted

GRAND FORKS (NEWS 1130) – Evacuation orders for more than 100 properties in Grand Forks due to flooding have been lifted.

Francis Maika with the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary says although a number of evacuation orders have been lifted downtown, dozens more remain in the Ruckles neighbourhood.

“This is a neighbourhood that was inundated with water — one of the worst-hit areas. There was sewage back-up as well, which is why we have to make sure we address any health concerns before we allow people back.”

Maika says even though some people are being allowed home, they’ll have their work cut out for them because of water damage and a lack of power.

“Fortis BC is not going to restore power until they know it’s safe to do so,” she explains.

She adds those with a “yellow code” on their homes need to have an electrician in to take a look at their systems.

The regional district is hoping Interior Health will give the all-clear to at least some of those properties later today.
