Mission toddler dies after going missing from daycare, was found in pool

MISSION (NEWS 1130) – A toddler has died after she was found in backyard pool in Mission yesterday.

Mission RCMP say at about 4:40 p.m. yeterday, the owner of a daycare on Hawthorne Avenue called 9-1-1.

“The caller reported that a 23-month-old girl was missing from a daycare. The caller estimated it had been approximately 10 minutes since the little girl was last seen,” says Staff Sergeant Steve Crawford.

When officers arrived, they began a search of the daycare and the neighbourhood and found her 20 minutes later.

“The little girl was found unresponsive in a large, underground swimming pool by one of the RCMP members. The member immediately jumped into the pool and retrieved the little girl, calling for assistance of the other members at the location,” says Crawford.

“The neighbours were home. We immediately began CPR, including the use of our portable defibrillator… until BC Ambulance Service arrived and took over.”

The girl was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

RCMP confirm there were other children at the daycare at the time, but it’s unclear how many.

“We’re investigating it to determine what occurred. At this point, we’re unsure of how she was able to leave the daycare or under what means,” says Crawford.

The BC Coroners Service is also involved, determining the cause of death.
