Wind concerns as crew fight three major wildfires in BC

By

LILLOOET (NEWS 1130) – There are three major fires burning around the province right now and nine new ones have started around BC over the last day.

Crews are closely watching the weather. A cold front is on its way, but the wind in the forecast is a concern.

“At this point the fires haven’t been super active over the last 24 hours but there is potential for that to change with that wind shift,” says Kevin Skrepnek with the BC Wildfire Service. “We are bracing for wind, typically 50 kilometres an hour.”

He says evacuation orders are in place for people impacted by the the Tommy Lakes fire in northeastern BC, the Allie Lake fire northwest of Kamloops and the Xusum Creek wildfire west of Lillooet.

“We’ve had some pretty unseasonably warm conditions for the last three week–that’s really what’s lead to this unusually aggressive fire behaviors we’ve been seeing over the last week or so.”

Since April, 227 fires have been recorded across the province.
