VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Trudeau government may have a tough time during the next year’s federal election, according to a new poll. It’s all because of Ottawa’s unwavering support of the controversial Trans Mountain pipeline.
Pollster Mario Canseco with Research Co calls the last election a unique situation.
“This coalition, if you will, that really came together to support Justin Trudeau and ensure that we did not have another terminal under Stephen Harper, those votes are borrowed. We don’t have a lot of people who are hardcore federal Liberals. And I think this is one of the reasons for them to take a second look and say, ‘Maybe we’ll go somewhere else when the next election rolls around.'”
The poll finds more than half of British Columbians think the feds made the wrong decision in buying the Trans Mountain pipeline and Kinder Morgan’s core assets.

Canseco says the Trudeau government’s support for the project has alienated both environmental supporters and fiscal Conservatives.
“Now that you’re using taxpayer money, that brings Conservatives into the front and it could definitely play a role in the chances of the Liberals in the next election, when you see that there’s 36 per cent of people who voted for them the last time are saying they’re not likely to do so the next.”
Just over half of those surveyed disagree the federal government should do “anything necessary to get the pipeline built.”
