SFU students report serial sexual harasser

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – A suspected serial harasser has several women on SFU’s Burnaby campus worried about their safety.

Dozens of women have taken to social media with stories about a man following them around campus, getting on buses with them, and asking for their phone number and to be added to their social media circles. Some women even describe a man attempting to hold their hands, asking them to be their boyfriend and getting angry when they say no.

While some of the women say the incidents happened as far back as last fall, SFU says it was only made aware of the concerns last week.

“Our campus public safety team took immediate action,” Kurt Heinrich with the university said. “We were able to locate the individual in question, provide them with a trespass notice and escort them off the campus.”

Heinrich said this is the first time this man has been brought to the attention of university staff.

Burnaby RCMP confirmed it has opened a case on the matter and is investigating, but has not said whether a suspect has been brought in or if they have spoken to the man who was escorted off campus.

Heinrich encourages anyone who feels unsafe on campus to contact security or RCMP and take advantage of their school’s safe walk program and new sexual assault support and prevention centre.
