Washington Capitals win the Stanley Cup

LAS VEGAS – The Washington Capitals have won their first Stanley Cup in franchise history.

It comes after a 4-3 win in game 5 over the Las Vegas Golden Knights. Lars Eller scored the game winner with less than ten minutes to play in the third period.

Alexander Ovechkin was the first to lift the cup as the team captain.

Alexander Ovechkin was given the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.

The franchise was started in 1974 and had reached the Stanley Cup final before, most recently in 1998 where they fell to the Detroit Red Wings.
