Severe thunderstorm alerts issued for Fraser Valley

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Anyone heading into the BC Interior today may have to a thunderstorm to contend with.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the eastern Fraser Valley including Hope, as well as for areas further north and east like Lillooet, Lytton, Chilcotin, Whistler, Nicola, Similkameen, and Penticton.

The weather service says heavy rain is possible over those regions today, as well as strong wind gusts and intense lightning.

Drivers may have to traverse flash flooding and water pooling on roads.

Meanwhile, people in the Lower Mainland are being told to brace for the first major heat wave of the season.

A special weather statement now in place for Metro Vancouver and the North Shore explains the cool weather pattern that has been affecting BC for the last couple weeks will start to give way to a strong and persistent ridge of high pressure.

Temperatures should start to peak into the low thirties as of Sunday.
