Langley team representing Canada in international tournaments

LANGLEY (NEWS 1130) – A group of 11-year-old boys from Langley is going to have the summer of a lifetime.

The team will represent Canada in a pair of international tournaments, including the Cal Ripken World Series, but they could use your help to get there.

Leslie Texiera is one of the mothers trying to help the team raise money to be able to go.

She says each player’s family will be forced to pay around $5,000 but this is a once in a lifetime experience.

“It’s going to be live streamed around the world, there’s a media day, they each get interviewed, they get a treasure chest of swag, they get to design their own Team Canada jersey–it’s crazy!”

Texiera says the team has a long list of training and intense practices ahead of them this month, with a number of exhibition games peppering the packed schedule to prepare the boys for international competition.

The first tournament is in Meridian, Idaho, in July. The World Series tournament is in August in Treasure Coast, Florida.

The goal for the GoFundMe page is $15,000 but the total fundraising goal is double that.

“We have a total goal of $30,000, so we’re reaching out to corporate sponsors and we’re going to do some events with the kids and stuff to raise more money.”

She says they started with a lower goal on the GoFundMe page, but increased it after an incredibly generous donor contributed $8,000 alone.

The money raised will make sure that these kids can play regardless of their family’s finances.

She says this will be the fourth time that a team from Langley has made it to a World Championship. As for this year’s crew of boys, Texiera says she doesn’t think the reality of making the World Series has hit them quite yet.
