More people are using BC Ferries than ever before

TSAWWASSEN (NEWS 1130) – If you think ferries have seemed busier than ever, you’re not wrong. BC Ferries is out with its fiscal year-end results for 2018 and the service saw the highest levels of vehicle traffic in its history.

Along with that, passenger traffic levels were the highest they’ve been in 20 years.

BC Ferries President and CEO Mark Collins says expansion is needed–and could be coming in a few years.

Collins says Ferries will be going to its regulator over the next 12 to 18 months looking to add service in certain areas.

“We need more capacity on the main routes connecting Vancouver Island to the Mainland–we certainly see very high traffic loads there. But also of great concern to us are smaller communities up and down the coast.”

Collins says if approval happens, it’ll likely be four or five years before you see those plans actually happen.
