Vancouver’s Eric Hamber Secondary to be rebuilt

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A 56-year-old high school near the corner of Oak and 33rd Avenue is being completely replaced with construction slated to start in the summer of 2020.

Education Minister Rob Fleming says the new Eric Hamber Secondary is the largest seismic project in the city’s history.

“It will also be the second-largest capital investment in BC history. It is a big school.”

He says the cost of replacing the school is 79.3-million dollars, but money will be saved because 17-hundred students don’t have to be displaced.

“The good news, though, is that we’ll be able to keep the old Eric Hamber in place to have what they call swing space to do many more high school upgrades that are needed in Vancouver. The new school will have what’s called a neighbourhood learning centre. There will be child care spaces in there, so it’s going to have a real community benefit and be used seven days a week.”

Fleming says the new school is slated to open in September 2022.
