Horse collapses on Good Samaritan in Maple Ridge after crash

MAPLE RIDGE (NEWS 1130) – A bizarre and tragic set of circumstances in Maple Ridge unfolded on Friday afternoon.

RCMP confirm shortly after 3:30 p.m. a horse and car collided in the area of 132nd Avenue west of Park Lane. They say a Good Samaritan stopped and pulled over to help that’s when the horse, which was injured, collapsed on the woman. She was rushed to the hospital with unknown injuries.

Police say a veterinarian in the area arrived on the scene and made the decision to euthanize the animal humanely.

“A police officer at the scene and the vet made that determination that the injuries were significant enough that the recommendation was that the horse be put down,” says Ridge Meadows RCMP Sergeant Brenda Gresiuk.

She adds the scene was chaotic and it’s believed the horse had escaped from a nearby property.

“[Crews] are working with the owner as well as with the assistance of the vet that was at the scene to make arrangements to have the horse removed.”

Gresiuk adds there was no rider on the horse. “We don’t have all the details of exactly how it got to where it was and the circumstances of it but it appears it had escaped from a near area or got out of the paddock.”

She says the driver of the car that originally struck the horse wasn’t hurt and the car could still be driven following the collision. It’s unclear if the horse stepped into the lane.
