NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Nearly two weeks after a large fire left a mother and her young son dead, crews in North Vancouver have finished their investigation.
While they have figured out where the flames started, they are not revealing the cause to the public just yet.
Fire Chief Brian Hutchinson says they’re now working with the RCMP, which will likely take over the investigation.
“I think they’ll probably take some time next week to determine what steps they may be taking to move forward and will then be getting out further information at that time.”
He thinks more details about the fire will be released next week. “No one has been able to get back in.”
The fire at the Mountain Village Garden Apartment complex on Mountain Highway near East 24th Street killed Narges Casnajad and her seven-year-old son Sepehr Koshkoye Delshad and displaced at least 70 other people.
Hutchinson adds housing for three to six months has been secured for the families affected and it’s unlikely they’ll ever be able to move back into the building because of all the damage. “There is hope that they’ll be able to retain some of their belongings and possessions from the building.”
The property will be handed over to the insurance company on Tuesday, which will determine what can be saved.
The call came in around 2:30 a.m. on Jun. 11 and the fire department sent several trucks to handle the fast-spreading fire engulfed part of the wood-framed building.
Just days after the fire, a GoFundMe page was launched to help those impacted — more than $60,000 has been raised and the goal is at least $100,000.
