Looking to cool off? Slide the City is back in North Vancouver

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Conditions will be slick on Lonsdale Avenue this weekend.

The North Vancouver road is being transformed into a giant water slide as part of Slide the City.

The City’s Lisa Sterling says the event, which features the 1,000 ft. water slide that spans from 8th Avenue down to 5th, is back for a fourth year. Another big crowd is expected.

“Over the two-day event, we’ve had anywhere between 8,000 and 10,000 [people], and this year we’re expecting about the same.”

While the city expects another large turnout, Sterling admits not everyone is a fan.

“Last year we had people that were disgruntled, of course you’re going to when you have road closures,” she explains, adding the road closure this time around has been shortened, and Lonsdale Avenue will stay open from 4th Street down to the Quay. “The east, west roads from 4th up to 8th will be open to local traffic only, so we’re giving them the accessibility to go in and out.”

So why Lonsdale? The conditions on that route are apparently just right for this kind of thing.

“The grade of Lonsdale has the perfect slope capability to support the slide,” she says.

As you can imagine, the slide needs lots of water to operate — about 30 to 40-000 litres a day. When all is said and done, Sterling says some of that H2O can be re-used.

“Depending on how much the chlorination level is at the end of it, we can sometimes put it on the grasses or we take it down to the operations centre.”

If slipping down a giant green and blue inflatable slide isn’t for you, there will also be food trucks and live music at Victoria Park.

The festival runs from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
