Parents in Surrey on edge after teen killed in random attack

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Mounties are warning people in parts of Surrey to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings, following the killing of a teen earlier this week.

Serena Vermeersch, 17, was found dead at 66th Avenue near 148th Street. Police say it was a random attack.

The killing and warning from police are certainly on the minds of many people who live in the area. Gus lives up the street from where it happened.

“Everybody’s obviously concerned. I have a daughter that age — a couple of them. We’ve told them they have to be on alert and be more aware of what’s going on, especially since we don’t know exactly what happened yet.”

“I have young kids and living in the neighbourhood, it makes me think about what I should do in the future,” says another father.

Police are telling people of all ages not to be distracted by phones or music players, walk with a friend when possible and to stay in well-lit areas.

Investigators are looking for a man seen in a grey or silver full-sized Dodge pickup, which was last seen close to where the body was found.
