SASKATOON – After seeing their three-goal lead evaporate, the Portland Winterhawks’ quick-strike offence ensured the race for the MasterCard Memorial Cup title is still wide open.

Derrick Pouliot and Chase De Leo scored 23 seconds apart in the third period Monday as Portland picked up its first win at the tournament with a 6-3 victory over the London Knights.

The result means that all four teams at the Canadian Hockey League showcase now sit with 1-1 records and guarantees a tiebreaker game on Thursday.

The Winterhawks, who were coming off a 7-4 loss to the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League on Saturday in a game that saw Portland blow a 3-1 lead, responded well after surrendering a similar edge against the Knights.

“It was a big win for our team. We needed to respond with a good effort,” said Winterhawks coach Travis Green, whose team led 3-0 midway through the second period before London stormed back. “That’s a real good hockey team we played over there. It was a hard-fought win and I’m happy with how our team played.”

Ty Rattie had two goals and an assist for the Western Hockey League champions, Saskatoon native Taylor Leier had a goal and two assists, and Oliver Bjorkstrand chipped in with a goal and an assist.

“I thought we had a really good start to the game and then we kind of let off the gas a bit, which we’ve done a couple times this post-season,” Portland defenceman Seth Jones said. “We’ve got to stop that. They got back in it but we were able to get a couple more goals and hold the lead.”

Mac Carruth made 25 saves for the Winterhawks after allowing all seven goals in the loss to Halifax.

“Maybe he’d like to have that first game back. We have total confidence in him,” Pouliot said. “It was good to see him play well tonight and we’re going to need that going forward.”

After London tied the game 3-3 early in the third period, Pouliot, a first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2012, ripped a shot off the shoulder of Knights goalie Anthony Stolarz and in on a Portland power play at 6:20. De Leo ended the London netminder’s night at 6:43 by sliding a shot home from the slot.

“We have to contribute every once in a while and do the little things and just do whatever it takes to help the boys win,” said De Leo, who plays on Portland’s checking line. “It felt good to finally get one on the board.”

Bo Horvat and Alex Broadhurst replied with a goal and an assist each for London, while Scott Harrington also scored. Stolarz allowed five goals on 26 shots before being replaced by Jake Patterson.

London will have to regroup quickly with the Knights’ round-robin finale against Halifax set for Tuesday night.

“We had a couple days off and didn’t have our legs under us again in the first period,” Horvat said. “Other than that we really regrouped well.”

Jones, the No. 1 ranked North American skater according to NHL Central Scouting ahead of next month’s draft, finished with a plus-4 rating for a Portland team that breathed a sigh of relief after a disappointing opener.

“We definitely calmed down a bit after this game,” he said. “It’s definitely good to get the first win under the belt.”

Down 3-2 after two periods, the Knights tied it early in the third when London forward Brett Welychka’s attempted deflection in front of Carruth fell to Broadhurst at the side of the Portland goal for an easy tap in.

The Winterhawks netminder kept the score tied with a stop of Josh Anderson on a partial breakaway a couple minutes later before Pouliot and De Leo struck in quick succession and Rattie scored into an empty net.

“They’re a good team over there and they know how to protect a lead. We did a great job battling back and just came up a little bit short at the end,” Knights forward Max Domi said. “We’re not looking to make excuses here. Realistically it’s one loss. It’s a tournament for a reason and we’re ready to battle back against Halifax.”

With Portland leading 1-0 after a sleepy first period, the floodgates opened in the second. Bjorkstrand doubled the Winterhawks’ lead at 2:17 after wheeling out from behind the London net and snapping a shot shortside on Stolarz.

Rattie then stretched the advantage to three with a goal with the teams playing 4-on-4 that was a carbon copy of his effort against Halifax on Saturday night. The St. Louis Blues draft pick moved into the London zone and toe dragged the puck around a Knights defender before slipping a backhand past Stolarz at 10:23 while falling to the ice.

Needing a spark, the Ontario Hockey League champions responded just 15 seconds later as Harrington moved into the high slot and wired a shot into the top corner past Carruth.

Horvat scored the game’s second highlight-reel goal at 12:30 on the power play. The 15th-ranked North American skater ahead of the draft took a slick between-the-legs pass from Domi right in front of Carruth before burying a shot past the Portland goalie.

“I turned my head slightly and saw Domi with his stick between his legs,” Jones said. “The next thing I know Horvat puts it top shelf in the back of the net. I wasn’t able to see the replay … but I’m betting it will be highlight of the night.”

The crowd of 7,575 at the Credit Union Centre seemed half asleep in the early going and the two teams didn’t do much to help wake them out of their slumber.

Coming off the high of the host Saskatoon Blades’ exciting 5-2 victory over Halifax on Sunday night, the half-empty arena finally came to life at 16:53 of the first period when Leier deflected a shot off the sideboards from Taylor Wotherspoon past Stolarz for the only action of note in a drab opening 20 minutes.

The Winterhawks have a day off before meeting the host Saskatoon Blades on Wednesday night in the round-robin finale.

“Our team doesn’t really get too high or too low, even when we’re winning,” Green said. “We’re a pretty relaxed group that works extremely hard.”

Notes: All four teams hold 1-1 records for the second straight year and for just the second time in history since the four-team format was adopted in 1983. … De Leo also had an assist for Portland. … Patterson finished with five saves for London. Knights coach Dale Hunter would not say who will start in goal against Halifax.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC Lions and free agent wide receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux have agreed to terms on a two-year contract. Arceneaux will return to the CFL after two years in the NFL.

The club has yet to comment on the deal, but Arceneaux’s agent Bardia Ghahremani has confirmed to News1130 Sports that the deal is done.

Arceneaux spent 2009-2010 with the Leos, and recorded 130 catches for 1972 yards and 12 touchdowns in 36 career games. He also had 269 receiving yards on 17 catches with one touchdown in three playoff games.

The 25-year-old left the Lions when he signed a three-year contract with the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings in January, 2011. He was released by the Vikings in September, 2012 and claimed by the Washington Redskins. He signed with the New York Jets four months ago but was waived on May 7.

The Toronto Argonauts and Edmonton Eskimos were also reportedly in on the sweepstakes.

The signing comes at a great time for the Lions, as Arceneaux will help ease the departures of receivers Geroy Simon and Arland Bruce early in the off-season.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A Scottish newspaper is reporting Whitecaps FC striker Kenny Miller is close to finalizing a return to the Glasgow Rangers.

The Scottish Sun says a deal could be announced within the next 72 hours. But, Whitecaps President Bob Lenarduzzi says this is news to him. “We’ve not heard anything from the Rangers or Kenny to suggest that anything like this is taking place. He’s injured right now. We’re hoping that he’ll be back to health in time for our Voyaguers Cup game against Montreal at the end of the month.”

The 33-year-old Miller has struggled with a hamstring injury through most of the season and has played very limited minutes. His last appearance was on March 30th vs Chivas USA.

A proven scorer that has represented his native Scotland at the international level, Miller became Vancouver’s fourth Designated Player signing in the club’s MLS history on July 16, 2012.

If the deal happens, it would be Miller’s third stint with Rangers.

OTTAWA – Colin Greening scored 7:39 into double overtime, and the Ottawa Senators rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins that cut their series deficit to 2-1 on Sunday night.

Daniel Alfredsson got Ottawa even 1-1 by scoring a short-handed goal with 29 seconds left in regulation, just after the Senators pulled goalie Craig Anderson for an extra skater.

Anderson made 49 saves, including 18 after regulation. Tomas Vokoun stopped 46 shots for Pittsburgh and took his first loss (4-1) since taking over for No. 1 Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series will be in Ottawa on Wednesday.

Tyler Kennedy scored with just over a minute to play in the second period to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead. That goal stood up until Alfredsson tied it.

BRUINS 5, RANGERS 2

BOSTON (AP) — Johnny Boychuk broke a tie midway through the second period, and Boston scored two goals in the third to beat the New York Rangers and take a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinal series.

Boychuk’s third playoff goal made it 3-2 at 12:08 of the second. Brad Marchand, whose overtime goal won the opener, and Milan Lucic stretched the Bruins’ lead in the final period.

Boston rookie Torey Krug scored the first goal before Ryan Callahan tied it for the Rangers in the first period. Gregory Campbell made it 2-1, and New York pulled even again on Rick Nash’s goal in the second.

Games 3 and 4 of the best-of-seven series will be played in New York.

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist, last year’s Vezina Trophy winner, had his second straight tough game after posting consecutive shutouts in Games 6 and 7 of the first round against the Washington Capitals when the Rangers faced elimination.

Tuukka Rask was solid for Boston, stopping 35 shots.

OTTAWA, ON (NEWS1130) – Colin Greening banged in the rebound off of a Andre Benoit shot, seven and half minutes into double overtime, to lift the Ottawa Senators to a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh. The Penguins still lead the series 2-1.

It was a splendid, fast-paced game that featured big hits, prime scoring opportunities and fine goaltending.

The Penguins scored first, when Tyler Kennedy banged one off the post and behind Craig Anderson with just over a minute to go in the second period. The goal was set up by a nice touch pass by former Canuck Matt Cooke.

The visitors looked like they would have commanding lead in the series, when Sens defenceman Erik Karlsson slashed Matt Cooke’s stick with 87 seconds left in the third.

Ottawa pulled the goalie, and Sens captain Daniel Alfredsson charged to the net and deflected a lovely feed from the left point by Milan Michalek by Pittsburgh goalie Tomas Vokoun with 29 seconds left in the third period to tie the game at 1-1 on the short-handed goal.

Anderson stopped 49 Penguins shots, while Vokoun made 46 saves in the Pittsburgh goal.

It was the first double overtime of the 2013 NHL Playoffs.

Game 4 goes Wednesday in Ottawa.

STOCKHOLM – Sweden became the first host country to win an IIHF World Championship in 27 years in large part because of the addition of Vancouver Canucks forwards Henrik and Daniel Sedin during the tournament.

Henrik scored the winning goal, assisted on a third goal and scored into an empty net in Sweden’s 5-1 victory over Switzerland in Sunday’s sold-out championship game at Globe Arena.

“To play in front of your home fans in your country and be able to win, that doesn’t happen often so that’s pretty amazing,” Henrik said.

“I don’t want to compare it to the NHL because I think it’s different, but as far as national team, it’s up there with an Olympic gold medal for sure.”

Henrik compiled four goals and five assists and twin brother Daniel had a goal and five assists in four games they played after the Canucks were swept in the first round of NHL playoffs by the San Jose Sharks.

The twin brothers had the most impact on Sweden’s power play. After scoring just two power-play goals in their first seven games of the tournament, Sweden scored five in their final three games. Daniel assisted on four and Henrik on three.

Henrik batted a puck out of the air for a power-play goal in the second period Sunday that pushed Sweden ahead 2-1.

“They showed they’re two of the best players in the world,” teammate Gabriel Landeskog said. “I can confidently say that, whether they won a (Stanley) Cup or not.

“Everyone was feeding off of them.”

Erik Gustafsson, Simon Hjalmarsson and Loui Eriksson also scored for Sweden, which became the first country to win the title at home since the Soviet Union in Moscow in 1986.

Nashville Predators defenceman Roman Josi scored for Switzerland. The Swiss, coached by Canadian Sean Simpson of Brampton, Ont., was the surprise of the tournament. Unbeaten until the final, the country hadn’t won a medal of any colour in 60 years until Sunday.

“We’re disappointed about the game,” Simpson said. “We lost it, and we won nine games before. Not many people believed before the tournament that we would play in a world championship final.

“I’m very proud of the work our team has done and about the silver medal. Switzerland has to be proud of this team.”

Josi, 22, became the first player from his country to be named the tournament’s most valuable player. He had four goals and five assists in 10 games and was also named best defenceman.

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Jhonas Enroth made 26 saves for Sweden and was named top goaltender. Former NHL goalie Martin Gerber stopped 22 shots for the Swiss.

The United States defeated the Finns 3-2 in a shootout for bronze. Canada finished fifth after losing in the quarter-finals for a fourth straight year.

Sweden started the tournament on a sour note with a 3-2 loss to the Swiss. They struggled to generate offence for much of the preliminary round, in which they finished third in their pool at 5-2 behind Switzerland and Canada.

The arrival of the Sedins injected confidence into the team and revitalized Sweden’s attack.

Sweden scored two power-play goals in their 3-2 shootout win over Canada in the quarter-final and another two in a 3-0 victory over Finland in the semifinal.

Canucks defenceman Alex Edler joined Sweden’s lineup with the Sedins, but he did not play in the semifinal or final. He was suspended for two games for his knee-on-knee contact with Canadian captain Eric Staal in the quarter-final.

“We had a meeting when everyone came, when the Sedins and Edler came,” Landeskog said. “We had a team meeting and talked about how it’s us against the world, media were against us and sometimes the crowd were against us. For us, it motivated us. It united us in the room and brought us together.

“For us to come together like we did, especially in the playoffs, was an amazing feeling. Obviously beating Canada in the quarter-finals kind of gave us that push to keep going and we rolled over Finland and rolled over here.”

Daniel was hit hard into the open gate on Sweden’s bench in the third period. He was in pain, but shook it off for the post-game celebrations.

“We’ve been to the Stanley Cup finals before. We lost in a seventh game. That’s obviously tough,” Daniel said. “Won Olympic gold. This is going to be up there with Olympic gold I would say. To do it on home ice is pretty neat.”

Notes: The 2014 IIHF World Championship will be held in Minsk, Belarus . . . Finland forward Petri Kontiola led the tournament in scoring with eight goals and eight assists in 10 games and was named top forward.

BOSTON – Johnny Boychuk broke a tie midway through the second period, and the Boston Bruins scored two goals in the third to beat the New York Rangers 5-2 on Sunday and take a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinal series.

Boychuk put a 40-foot shot from the right inside the near post for his third playoff goal to make it 3-2 at 12:08. Brad Marchand, whose overtime goal won the opener, and Milan Lucic stretched the Bruins’ lead in the final period.

Boston never trailed as rookie Torey Krug scored the first goal before Ryan Callahan tied it. Gregory Campbell made it 2-1, and New York pulled even again on Rick Nash’s goal.

Games 3 and 4 of the best-of-seven series will be played in New York on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

New York goalie Henrik Lundqvist, last year’s Vezina Trophy winner, had his second straight tough game after posting consecutive shutouts in Games 6 and 7 of the first round against the Washington Capitals when the Rangers faced elimination.

Tuukka Rask was solid again for Boston, stopping 35 shots.

Marchand scored on a similar play to the one that gave Boston a 3-2 overtime win on Thursday night.

On Sunday, Patrice Bergeron carried the puck through the neutral zone along the right side, while Marchand raced toward the net. Bergeron skated deep into the Rangers zone and then passed the puck across the crease to Marchand, who was waiting to tip it past Lundqvist for his second playoff goal.

Lucic made it 5-2 at 12:39 of the third. He skated into the New York end and gave the puck to David Krejci, who was stopped by Lundqvist, but Lucic converted the rebound.

Krug scored his second goal of the series and second of his two-game NHL post-season career to put Boston ahead 1-0 at 5:28 of the first period. Krug fired a shot from just inside the left circle that sailed through a screen and got between Lundqvist’s pads.

New York tied it less than three minutes later when Callahan intercepted Marchand’s pass at the Boston blue line and skated up the left side while outmanoeuvringdefenceman Dougie Hamilton. Callahan cut across the front of the crease and scored into the open right side of the net.

The Bruins took another short-lived lead when Campbell got his first goal of the playoffs at 2:24 of the second period. Krug’s 45-foot shot from the left hit the left skate of Rangers defenceman Dan Girardi in front and went to Campbell, who beat Lundqvist.

That lead lasted less than a minute as Nash scored at 3:20 with a 10-foot shot from the slot over Rask’s right shoulder. It was Nash’s first goal in his nine playoff games this year after leading the Rangers with 21 goals during the regular season.

NOTES: Lundqvist has started New York’s last 29 games against Boston. … The Bruins played their second straight game without injured veteran defencemen Andrew Ference, Dennis Seidenberg and Wade Redden. … A Bruins defenceman got a goal or an assist on each of the team’s goals. … The margin of victory was more than two goals for just the second time in 26 games between the Rangers and Bruins. … In their nine playoff games, the Rangers have scored just twice on 35 power plays. They are 0-for-7 against the Bruins.

MANCHESTER, England – Arsenal qualified for the Champions League for the 16th straight season after edging Tottenham to fourth place in the Premier League, as Alex Ferguson bowed out as Manchester United manager with a 5-5 draw against West Bromwich Albion.

Laurent Koscielny’s 52nd-minute volley sealed an unconvincing 1-0 for Arsenal at Newcastle, rendering Spurs’ 1-0 victory over Sunderland — courtesy of a late screamer from Gareth Bale — meaningless. Chelsea finished third by beating Everton 2-1.

With the title fight decided and three relegation spots settled, the remaining business was bidding farewell to several icons of English football.

Ferguson’s 1,500th and last match at United was a disappointment in which his team surrendered a 5-2 lead to draw, while Paul Scholes, Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen played their final games before retiring.
