SASKATOON (NEWS1130) – Surrey’s Tyler Wotherspoon tied the game and Ty Rattie scored the winner in the third as Portland edged London 2-1 in the Memorial Cup semi-final. Delta’s Nicolas Petan assisted on both goals.

Ex-NHLer Tie Domi’s son Max opened the scoring for the OHL champs on a power play in the middle of the second period.

Wotherspoon evened the game a couple of minutes later when his wrist shot from the point hit a Knights player and went in, which evened the score for the Hawks.

In the third, Rattie cruised into the slot from the left wing boards and whipped a high wrist shot over the shoulder of London goalie Jake Patterson.

Petan has a half dozen assists in four Memorial Cup games for Portland.

Portland is the second ranked team in major junior hockey. They will take on the top ranked Halifax Mooseheads in Sundays final.

The top three draft eligible players in North America will be featured in the final. Winterhawks defenceman Seth Jones is the top ranked junior player. Halifax forwards Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin are next on the list.

The BC Lions have added a fifth quarterback for training camp in Kamloops. The Leos have agreed to terms with former Blue Bomber Joey Elliott who is expected to battle for the team back up job.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC Lions have added free agent quarterback Joey Elliott to their roster for training camp in Kamloops.

Elliott attended the Lions’ Las Vegas player evaluation camp, and has spent the past three seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

“He is going to make us better by raising the competition of our back-up quarterbacks heading into training camp,” said Lions VP of football operations and GM Wally Buono.

Elliott served as a back up to former Lions quarterback Buck Pierce in Winnipeg, playing in 33 games, including nine as a starter. He gives the Lions five quarterbacks entering camp, and is expected to battle for the backup job behind starter Travis Lulay.

The Purdue grad enjoyed his best pro season in 2012, throwing for 2,101 yards and five touchdowns. He gives the Lions five quarterbacks entering next month’s training camp at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops.

SASKATOON, SK (NEWS1130) – The host Blades were bounced from the national major junior championship by the London Knights 6-1. The Ontario league champs will square off with Portland in the semi-final game on Friday.

The Knights opened the scoring in the first period, as Bo Horvat scored on a penalty shot. The OHL champs were short-handed at the time.

It was 1-0 after a period, and then London added two more in the middle frame, including the game winner by Seth Griffith.

The Knights sealed the victory with three goals in 66 seconds, early in the third period.

The Blades were eliminated in the WHL playoffs by Medicine Hat in four straight games in the opening round. They waited over 50 days before playing their tournament opener last Friday.

Three year Vancouver Giants winger Nathan Burns was traded to Saskatoon 15 games into the season. He had a goal and an assist in four games at the tournament.

London meets the WHL champions, the Portland Winterhawks in the semi-final. The winner of that game advances to the championship game on Sunday versus the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL.

Kenny Miller had a full training session with his Whitecaps teammates today. The highest-paid Whitecaps player is confident he can return from a hamstring injury next Wednesday against Montreal.

VANCOUVER, BC (NEWS1130) - Striker Kenny Miller (hamstring) had a full training session with his Whitecaps teammates today and believes there is a chance he could be ready for their next game, Vancouver’s Canadian Championship match against Montreal at BC Place next Wednesday.

“I feel good. Obviously the lads have had a few days off, a week ahead to prepare for a huge game at BC Place and that will be ample time for us to go out there and hopefully get the right result,” says Miller, who originally injured his hamstring in a training session in early April.

The 33-year-old designated player is also addressing the recent Scottish media report that suggested he was wanting to leave Vancouver and return home to play for the Glasgow Rangers, saying that he’s under contract to Vancouver and plans to honour it. Miller, who makes just over $1.1 million this season says his focus in the last six weeks has been to get fit and get back on the field and help get results.

Midfielder Daigo Kobayashi, who missed Saturday’s draw with Portland with an ankle injury trained today and seems ready for action, while midfielder Gershon Koffie, who was shaken up in the Timbers match appears to be fine.

Rick Dhaliwal in the News1130 Sports Centre says Gillis will probably stay with the club unless the Canucks have another two years of back-to-back first-round exits.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Now that the Vancouver Canucks have fired head coach Alain Vigneault, the big question for fans is: How long does GM Mike Gillis have to get the team back on track?

“He’s tight with the owner; he’s got a lot of time,” says Rick Dhaliwal in the News1130 Sports Centre.

“He’s got time left on his contract. Mike Gillis isn’t going anywhere unless they have another two years of back-to-back first-round exits. But he seems to be safe. The owner likes him and obviously, yesterday, they made the first move. The onus now is on Mike to make the necessary roster adjustments.”

“Most GMs who are hired by the owner… they do get the pass. He got the pass yesterday.”

“Vigneault, with first-round back-to-back exits… [the Canucks] were the higher seed in those two years and they didn’t get the job done against two teams that were clearly below them in the standings,” adds Dhaliwal.

After seven seasons behind the Canucks bench, Alain Vigneault is no longer the head coach of the team. He was dismissed along with associate coaches Rick Bowness and Newell Brown.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Two years after he guided the Vancouver Canucks to the Stanley Cup finals, head coach Alain Vigneault has been fired.

“We have made the very difficult decision to relieve Alain Vigneault, Rick Bowness and Newell Brown of their coaching duties today,” said Canucks President and General Manager, Mike Gillis.

“Alain, Rick and Newell worked tirelessly to lead this team to great on-ice success. I am personally grateful to each of them and their families for their commitment to the Canucks and the city of Vancouver and wish them continued success in future.”

Vigneault was the 16th head coach in franchise history and has the most wins with 313 in 540 games coached. He was presented the Jack Adams Award as NHL Coach of the year in 2007.

Since he took the job on June 20, 2006, Vigneault has led the team to two Presidents Trophies, a Stanley Cup Final appearance, and six Northwest Division titles. But, with the team being bounced in the first round of the playoffs for the past two years, time is up for Vigneault and the club is looking to go in a different direction.

No replacement coach has been named.

The BC Lions will add to their Wall of Fame at BC Place this summer. Former head coach Don Matthews and one-time Lions quarterback Damon Allen will be honoured at a July home game.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The BC Lions have announced that coaching legend Don Matthews and former Lions quarterback Damon Allen will be added to the team’s Wall of Fame during a halftime ceremony on Saturday, July 20th when the Lions host the Edmonton Eskimos.

“We are very pleased to welcome two of our most popular and accomplished alumni to the Wall of Fame,” said Lions president and CEO Dennis Skulsky.

Matthews joined the Lions in January 1983 and would lead the Leos to West Division titles in 1983 and 1985, and after a heartbreaking one-point loss to Toronto in the 1983 Grey Cup at BC Place, he would guide the team to a 37-24 victory over Hamilton in the 1985 Grey Cup, which at the time was the team’s first championship since 1964. Matthews winning percentage of .706 is still tops among Lions coaches. He was surpassed for the CFL all-time victory mark in recent years by current Lions general manager Wally Buono.

Allen joined the Lions in 1996, after 11 years in the CFL between Edmonton and the old Memphis Mad Dogs. He left as the team’s all-time leading passer with 27,621 yards, 136 touchdowns and 2,037 completions, leading the team to the 2000 Grey Cup championship. Allen was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2012, and still ranks second in CFL passing yards and third in all-time rushing.

The Lions open training camp in Kamloops on Sunday, June 2nd and kick off 2013 with a preseason game at Calgary on June 14th.

The BC Lions and free agent wide receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux have agreed to terms on a two-year contract. Arceneaux will return to the CFL after two years in the NFL.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC Lions and free agent wide receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux have agreed to terms on a two-year contract. Arceneaux will return to the CFL after two years in the NFL.

The club has yet to comment on the deal, but Arceneaux’s agent Bardia Ghahremani has confirmed to News1130 Sports that the deal is done.

Arceneaux spent 2009-2010 with the Leos, and recorded 130 catches for 1972 yards and 12 touchdowns in 36 career games. He also had 269 receiving yards on 17 catches with one touchdown in three playoff games.

The 25-year-old left the Lions when he signed a three-year contract with the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings in January, 2011. He was released by the Vikings in September, 2012 and claimed by the Washington Redskins. He signed with the New York Jets four months ago but was waived on May 7.

The Toronto Argonauts and Edmonton Eskimos were also reportedly in on the sweepstakes.

The signing comes at a great time for the Lions, as Arceneaux will help ease the departures of receivers Geroy Simon and Arland Bruce early in the off-season.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A Scottish newspaper is reporting Whitecaps FC striker Kenny Miller is close to finalizing a return to the Glasgow Rangers.

The Scottish Sun says a deal could be announced within the next 72 hours. But, Whitecaps President Bob Lenarduzzi says this is news to him. “We’ve not heard anything from the Rangers or Kenny to suggest that anything like this is taking place. He’s injured right now. We’re hoping that he’ll be back to health in time for our Voyaguers Cup game against Montreal at the end of the month.”

The 33-year-old Miller has struggled with a hamstring injury through most of the season and has played very limited minutes. His last appearance was on March 30th vs Chivas USA.

A proven scorer that has represented his native Scotland at the international level, Miller became Vancouver’s fourth Designated Player signing in the club’s MLS history on July 16, 2012.

If the deal happens, it would be Miller’s third stint with Rangers.

The Penguins still lead the series 2-1.

It was a splendid, fast-paced game that featured big hits, prime scoring opportunities and fine goaltending.

The Penguins scored first, when Tyler Kennedy banged one off the post and behind Craig Anderson with just over a minute to go in the second period. The goal was set up by a nice touch pass by former Canuck Matt Cooke.

The visitors looked like they would have commanding lead in the series, when Sens defenceman Erik Karlsson slashed Matt Cooke’s stick with 87 seconds left in the third.

Ottawa pulled the goalie, and Sens captain Daniel Alfredsson charged to the net and deflected a lovely feed from the left point by Milan Michalek by Pittsburgh goalie Tomas Vokoun with 29 seconds left in the third period to tie the game at 1-1 on the short-handed goal.

Anderson stopped 49 Penguins shots, while Vokoun made 46 saves in the Pittsburgh goal.

It was the first double overtime of the 2013 NHL Playoffs.

Game 4 goes Wednesday in Ottawa.
