20th century works planned for New York City Opera's 2010-11 season

NEW YORK - The New York premieres of Bernstein's "A Quiet Place" and Stephen Schwartz's "Seance on a Wet Afternoon," the world stage premiere of John Zorn's "La Machine de l'etre" and the U.S. stage premiere of Morton Feldman's "Neither" highlight New York City Opera's 2010-11 season.

In its second season since returning to Lincoln Center, City Opera will focus on 20th century American composers as it presents another abbreviated schedule of just five productions.

"A Quiet Place," the sequel to "Trouble in Tahiti," premiered in 1983. The new staging opens Oct. 27, the company said Tuesday, and will be directed by Christopher Alden and stars soprano Sara Jakubia, mezzo-soprano Patricia Risley and tenor Dominic Armstrong.

Strauss' "Intermezzo" opens four days later in a Leon Major production starring soprano Mary Dunleavy and will be sung in English.

A revival of Jonathan Miller's production of Donizetti's "L'Elisir d'Amore," which sets the opera in the U.S. Southwest of the 1950s, opens March 22 and stars soprano Stefania Dovhan and tenor David Lomeli.

A triple bill of Schoenberg's "Erwartung," Feldman's "Neither" and Zorn's "La Machine de l'etre" starts three days later and "Seance," which stars soprano Lauren Flanigan and baritone Kim Josephson, opens April 19.

The company also will present a concert series including Christine Brewer, Kristin Chenoweth, Raul Esparza, Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson.
