Italian Day back after nearly 30 years!

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The ‘Drive is alive — after a nearly 30-year hiatus, Italian Day is back in Vancouver!  You can see the green, white and red from a mile away.  You can check out or take part in a pizza throwing contest, grape crushing, or enjoy a pick-up game of soccer.

Brunella, whose parents are from Italy, explains what the day is all about — for her.  “We’re commemorating the Italian heritage and I feel proud in today, bringing everybody together in an Italian celebration.”

Marco, owns a bakery on the ‘Drive and says for him it’s all about family.  “It just brings back memories of me when I was a kid, Italian Day was a huge part of my childhood.  It’s kind of neat that it’s coming back and I get to bring my kids down.”

Cafe owner Ben says with the World Cup getting underway Friday, the party would be a lot more exciting if the City of Vancouver would close the surrounding streets.

With the biggest soccer tournament kicking off later this week, many cafes and restaurants will be opening their doors at 4 a.m. for early games.  Not surprising, everyone we chatted with predicted an Italy repeat.

Keep it locked on News1130 for full coverage of the World Cup.
