“Walk In Her Shoes Challenge” aims to support women in developing countries
VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A wave of walkers will be moving through the Jericho Beach area of Vancouver tomorrow morning, setting out to support women in another country.
The “Walk In Her Shoes Challenge” is expected to draw hundreds of people who will be aiming to take 10,000 steps
That’s the same distance women and girls in developing countries often have to travel for basic necessities like food and water, according to Christine Parsons with CARE Canada.
“So the proceeds of this walk will go to CARE Canada’s work, and specifically this year, we’re going to be dedicating funds to a women’s economic empowerment project in Bolivia,” Parsons explains.
Those funds will help families in poor areas increase the productivity of their farms.
“We’re also working on what are the dynamics between women and men in the household, but also at the decision-making table. So we’re working with municipalities on their policies around local economic development,” Parsons adds.
The walk starts at 9:30 by the tennis courts at Jericho, and everyone is encouraged to wear orange.
It comes just before International Women’s Day, which is on Tuesday.
