VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Over 80,000 drivers are expected to cross the Lower Mainland borders this long weekend.

There are a few simple things you can do make your wait time shorter.

This, behind Black Friday, may be one of the busiest weekends of the year.

Faith St John with Canada Border Services wants people crossing the line this weekend to be prepared to wait. She says the biggest delay is people who show up at the window and aren’t ready for the border officer.

“Either they don’t have their receipts with them, sometimes they have them in the trunk of the car, they have to go get them out, or they don’t have documents with them. Again, some people don’t have them or they’re on their cell phones.”

As far as coming back to Canada, she says Monday will be the busiest day, with Peace Arch consistently having the longest wait times. Keep it tuned to News1130 for the latest on border wait times.

A typical May Long Weekend in BC will see hundreds of crashes and up to three people will be killed. Mounties who are setting up roadblocks province-wide.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – On average every May long weekend in BC – three people die on our roads.

Mounties will be out in full force to help crack down on bad drivers.

They’ll be looking out for anyone who’s distracted, speeding, tailgating or crossing illegally through intersections.

RCMP Corporal Robert MacDonald says they’ll be focusing on the Sea-to-Sky region and on Highway 3. “There will be roadblocks all over the place, in several key areas where people might be drinking. We want people to plan ahead before they go drinking.”

On average this long weekend, there are 1,700 crashes and 500 people are injured across the province.

This is all part of a national campaign to help make Canada’s roads the safest in the world by 2015.

A new survey showing 83 per cent of Canadians will take a vacation in the next four months. Less than half of travelers get insurance. If you get injured, it could cost you thousands of dollars.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A new survey shows 83 per cent of us plan on taking a vacation this summer.

Less than half will get travel insurance.

Canadians plan on spending over $3,000 on average between now and September getting out of town.

Julie Barker-Merz from BMO insurance points out that amount can skyrocket if you have an accident or a medical emergency while out of the country.

“I think we’re spoiled in Canada in that we have really great medical coverage. In the US, for instance, it could cost you upwards of twenty-thousand dollars just for a broken leg. Even an air ambulance is fifteen-thousand dollars, and that would be all be out of pocket.”

She says the biggest reason she hears why people don’t get insurance is they think they won’t need it or they mistakenly believe they are already covered, either by work or MSP.

A retired professor blames poor youth turnout at the polls on a failure of socialization, saying it's something kids just don't seem to care about.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Your kids need to learn the importance of taking part in the political process.

Retired UVIC Professor Norman Ruff blames poor youth turnout at the polls on a failure of socialization.

He feels adding a civics class in schools would be a great benefit, and adds there could even be a push to get 16-year-olds registered so they’re ready to vote once they are 18.

“For my generation we were taught civics at school, the role of government in our lives and the importance of taking part in the political process. That’s not there anymore.

But Ruff says it’s not just youth – politicians need to do a better job convincing all voters their ballot counts.

And in this age of technology, people need to be pushed to make the physical commitment to vote.
