At least one person in the United States is suddenly rich – very, very rich.

A lottery official in the States confirmed one winning ticket has been sold in Florida for a record Powerball jackpot of more than $590 million.

Officials confirmed the winning ticket was sold in Florida, however it’s unclear if it was sold to an individual or group.

Florida lottery secretary Cindy O’Connell says the odds of winning are extremely slim.

“It’s amazing and that’s what makes Powerball such an exciting game to play, the odds that you will get all five plus the Powerball,” O’Connel said.

Statistically chances of winning are astronomically low at 1 in 175.2 million.

The Victoria Day weekend is often the traditional start of planting and gardening for many people here in Canada.

As things begin to warm up, many people take out their tools and start digging, trimming and planting, all of which can be hard work.

Before going for a run or hitting the gym you likely stretch and warm up, but how about before starting gardening?

Dr. Stacy Irvine, a chiropractor at Totum Life Science, says it’s important to do that, and also to break up your work.

“Try to spend approximately fifteen minutes doing each task, which means that you’re going to be changing your body position while gardening,” Irvine said. “People get in trouble when they stay in one position for too long.”

Improper techniques can lead to back injuries as well as repetitive strain injuries to joints and muscles.

Beyond warming up and alternating tasks, it’s also important to lift right – bending your knees and keeping a straight back – as well as kneeling to plant.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Lottery officials say the winning numbers in a near-historic Powerball jackpot have been drawn.

They are: 10, 13, 14, 22, 52 and Powerball 11.

Officials say the latest Powerball jackpot figure results are still pending. They had estimated it at $600 million.

With four of every five possible combinations of Powerball numbers in play, someone is almost sure to win the game’s highest jackpot. The problem, of course, is those same odds just about guarantee the lucky person won’t be you.

The chances of winning the prize remain astronomically low: 1 in 175.2 million. That’s how many different ways you can combine the numbers when you play.

But since about 80 per cent of the possible combinations have been purchased, lottery officials say it’s likely the winning ticket could be selected.

SASKATOON – Nathan MacKinnon doesn’t think his performance at the MasterCard Memorial Cup on Saturday night will change the minds of many NHL scouts, but the flashy centre is sure of one thing — the Halifax Mooseheads deserve their ranking as the No. 1 team in the Canadian Hockey League.

The 17-year-old from Cole Harbour, N.S., grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck in the second period, scoring at even strength, on the power play and while shorthanded as the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champions exploded for five straight goals to cruise past the Portland Winterhawks 7-4 in both teams’ first game at the tournament.

“I think we definitely earned a little bit more respect,” MacKinnon told a massive media gathering. “Obviously coming from the (QMJHL), sometimes we get looked down upon a little bit but I thought we had a good game and definitely sent a message.”

The slick centre, ranked as the No. 2 North American skater for next month’s draft behind Portland defenceman Seth Jones, added an assist to his hat trick, while Martin Frk, with a goal and an assist, Jonathan Drouin, Luca Ciampini and Stephen MacAuley also scored for a Halifax team that found itself down 3-1 early in the second. Zachary Fucale was strong in net, making 37 saves to get the win as the Mooseheads got off to the start they wanted in the round-robin event to decide the CHL title.

“Obviously (MacKinnon) won’t be scoring three goals every night but at the same time he’s a guy that competes all the time. Tonight he made things happen,” Mooseheads coach Dominique Ducharme said. “He was skating. He was hard on the puck. It was hard to get the puck away from him. He was strong on it and obviously he was a key player in our comeback.

“He’s the kind of player that can make a difference like that.”

The game featured three top ranked North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting ahead of next month’s draft in Jones, who had a goal in the first period for Portland, MacKinnon and Drouin.

And while Jones is still expected to go first overall in Newark, N.J., this night belonged to the kid from Sidney Crosby’s hometown.

“The (NHL) teams here that are watching us have watched all of us play many times this year. I don’t know how much this game is going to change anything,” said MacKinnon as he sported a black fur coat given out by the Mooseheads coaches to their player of game. “Obviously it’s nice to get a few (goals) but I just wanted to win and I’m glad we did.”

Troy Rutkowski had two goals for Portland, while Tie Rattie added a goal and two assists. A shaky Mac Carruth allowed seven goals on 35 shots in taking the loss for the Western Hockey League’s top team, which is ranked No. 2 in the CHL.

Ranked as the No. 1 North American skater for the draft in the early part of the season before being overtaken by Jones, MacKinnon put an exclamation point on his performance late in the second period to put the game effectively out of reach. With a goal and an assist already in his back pocket and the Mooseheads up 4-3, he danced around the big Winterhawks defenceman on a Halifax power play at 14:03 and beat Carruth before firing a shot past the beleaguered netminder from behind the Portland goal-line with 1:25 left in the period.

“He’s a great offensive player, very dynamic. He’s got great foot speed,” Jones said. “You saw on his second goal coming down against me — a quick inside-outside move — it’s tough to contain.”

With the teams tied 1-1 after the first, goals came fast and furious in the second. Rutkowski scored on a shot from the point after just 39 seconds and Rattie wove through the Halifax defence on a Portland power play before sliding a backhand home at 2:11 to put the Winterhawks up by two.

The two-goal deficit seemed to spark the Mooseheads, who scored the game’s next five goals. Drouin popped a rebound at 3:16 before MacKinnon scored his first of the night on a deflection 1:20 later.

After the Winterhawks’ Oliver Bjorkstrand chimed a shot off the crossbar behind Fucale about eight minutes into the period, Ciampini gave Halifax the lead by walking out of the corner and beating Carruth on the power play at 11:17. MacKinnon then went to work offensively on the power play and the penalty kill to put Halifax in the driver’s seat.

“It wasn’t the start (to the tournament) we wanted. It was the start to the game we wanted. I thought we played real well for about 25 to 27 minutes and the game got away from us for about 10 minutes there,” Winterhawks coach Travis Green said. “They got a couple of bounces and they’re a good team and the momentum went to their side.”

Rutkowski scored on a Portland man advantage at 1:09 of the third to cut the Halifax lead to 6-4, but MacAulay restored the Mooseheads’ three-goal edge at 5:33.

It wasn’t as easy early on for the Mooseheads as the Winterhawks, who carried the play for much of the first period in outshooting Halifax 16-7, were unlucky to be only tied 1-1 heading to the second.

Rattie ripped off a puck off the post for Portland that stayed out five minutes into the game and Fucale was forced to make a couple of big saves for a Halifax team that was a bit scrambly in its own zone.

Despite having the better chances, the Winterhawks trailed 1-0 after MacKinnon wheeled into the offensive zone and found Frk in the slot, who beat Carruth through the five-hole. Jones evened the score just 55 seconds later by taking a pass from Tyler Wotherspoon off the rush and beating Fucale with a snapshot over the glove.

“We didn’t have the first period we wanted,” Ducharme said. “After their third goal in the second we came back with our strength and played much better. We’re happy with the win but we know we can be much better (over) 60 minutes.

“We were not skating as well as we’re able to skate. We were not applying pressure. We were watching them a little bit too much and we were not as active as we want to be.

“When we started doing that we played better.”

Notes: MacKenzie Weegar had two assists for Halifax, while Derrick Pouliot added three of his own for Portland. … Halifax was 2 for 6 on the power play. Portland scored twice on its eight chances. … The Mooseheads take on the host Saskatoon Blades (0-1) on Sunday. The next game for the Winterhawks goes Monday against the London Knights (1-0). … Steve Hartley, the son of Calgary Flames coach Bob Hartley, is an assistant with Halifax. … The crowd of 8,771 at the Credit Union Centre joined in to help anthem singer Alexis Normand after she forgot the words to The Star-Spangled Banner. … Super Fan Cameron Hughes has attended the first two games of the tournament, whipping up the crowd up during commercial breaks. Hughes was profiled in Sports Illustrated last August.

VANCOUVER – Second-half substitute Jose Valencia’s goal in the 83rd minute gave the Portland Timbers a 2-2 draw with the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday in Major League Soccer action.

Will Johnson also scored for Portland and assisted on the winner as the Timbers (4-1-7) extended their unbeaten strike to 10 games. The tying marker came while Portland was playing with 10 men due to Mamadou Danso’s ejection only two minutes earler.

Camilo led Vancouver with a goal and an assist, while Gershon Koffie also scored for the Whitecaps (3-4-4), who remained unbeaten at home (3-0-3).

Valencia scored after receiving a long, high lob from Johnson. Valencia and Vancouver defender Brad Rusin went up for the ball in the Whitecaps box, and it appeared to touch the Porland player’s arm. But play was allowed to continue, and Valencia tucked a short shot inside the near post.

Continuing a trend of recent games, Vancouver coach Martin Rennie juggled his lineup and made some surprising moves.

Goalkeeper Brad Knighton received his first start of the MLS season after backstopping the Whitecaps to a 0-0 with Montreal in Amway Canadian Championship play Wednesday. Also, striker Darren Mattocks was rendered a substitute after scoring in Vancouver’s last MLS game, and defender Alain Rochat, a perrenial starter, was also deployed as a reserve.

Both Mattocks and Rochat came on as late substitutes.

Jordan Harvey started in Rochat’s place on the back line after doing likewise in Montreal while the veteran left back used as a midfielder. Rochat again played midfield

Meanwhile, Camilo, who has been utilized mainly as a midfielder, played as a lone striker. The move paid off as Camilo generated some early scoring chances.

The Brazilian fired just wide on a free kick from about 35 yards out in the 23rd minute, taking the shot after Russell Teibert was fouled on the right flank. But Camilo made no mistake a minute later as he curled a shot hight into the corner of the net from about 20 yards.

The free kick resulted after Camilo himself was fouled by Johnson, a Toronto native, who received a yellow card for the infraction.

Despite holding the lead, the Whitecaps spent much of the time in their half of the pitch, and Knighton was forced to dive and share a Rodney Wallace header on 30 minutes. Three minutes later, the Timbers lost forward Darlington Nagbe after he was injured in a sequence in which Portland’s Diego Valeri delivered a hard tackle on Vancouver’s Young-Pyo Lee.

Nagbe was replaced by Kalif Alhassan.

Camilo had another chance in the first minute of the second half, but Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts dove to stop his shot from just outside the right corner of the 18-yard box.

In the 52nd minute, Johnson made up for his miscue on Camilo’s goal as he fired in a penalty kick to create a 1-1 tie. The spot kick resulted after Johnson’s shot hit Vancouver defender Andy O’Brien’s arm and the Caps were called for a hand-ball.

But Koffie put the hosts ahead just two minutes later as Camilo, grappling with two defenders in the Portland box, sent the ball back to him and he curled in a high shot.

Danso received a straight red card after he and Camilo tangled legs while rushing for a loose ball deep in the Portland zone.

But the short-handed situation did not hurt the Timbers for long as Valencia emerged the hero for the visitors.

Notes: The game served as part of an in-season competition, the Cascadia Cup, between Vancouver, Portland and the Seattle Sounders. … Gambian centre back Pa-Modou Kah dressed for his first game with Portland after signing earlier this week. He is expected to see action soon. The Timbers have a shortage at centre back as David Horst and Mikael Silvestre battle knee injuries that are expected to keep them out six to nine months. The Timbers also released Colombian centre back Hanyer Mosquera after he returned to his homeland. … Vancouver striker Kenny Miller (hamstring) and midfielder Daigo Kobayashi remained out with injuries.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Playing with 10 men late in the second half, Jose Valencia scored in the 84th minute to level the Portland Timbers with Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2-2 at BC Place. Camilo and Gershon Koffie scored Vancouver’s goals.

After just missing on a free kick, Camilo scored in the 24th minute when he bent a right-footed shot from the right side of the 18-yard-box into the top right side of the net. It was the first time in over five MLS matches the Caps had led the Timbers.

At the half hour mark, Vancouver goalkeeper Brad Knighton made a nice save off of a Rodney Wallace header. It was Knighton’s first start in MLS play for the ‘Caps this season.

Vancouver led at the half 1-0, in front of almost 20,000 fans.

Six minutes into the second half, the ball hit the hand of Vancouver defender Andy O’Brien in the Whitecaps 18-yard-box.

Canadian international Will Johnson converted from the penalty spot to level the game at 1-1.

Whitecaps FC responded just two minutes later, when Camilo set up Gershon Koffie who smoked a shot from outside the area, high to the right side of Timbers goalie Donovan Ricketts.

Portland defender Mamadou Danso was shown a red card in the 81st minute for a bad foul.

The visitors levelled the game when Johnson found Valencia with a long high pass, which the Columbian appeared to control with his hands, before beating Knighton. The goal ensured the Timbers are unbeaten in 10 games.

In six matches in MLS, Vancouver has managed two draws and four losses versus their Cascadia Cup rivals.

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The NHL fined the San Jose Sharks $100,000 on Saturday for general manager Doug Wilson’s comments criticizing the league for forward Raffi Torres’ suspension for the rest of the second round of the playoffs.

The NHL said the fine was issued for violating a rule put in place earlier this year prohibiting formal team statements to the media during the 48-hour period following a disciplinary decision. The rule calls for an automatic $25,000 fine, and the Sharks were docked an additional $75,000 under an article in the league’s constitution because of the “inappropriate nature of the comments.”

Torres was suspended for the rest of San Jose’s playoff series against Los Angeles on Thursday for an illegal check to the head of Kings forward Jarret Stoll during Game 1. The Kings took a 2-0 lead into Game 3 on Saturday night in San Jose.

Wilson said Friday that the organization strongly disagreed with the NHL’s decision to suspend Torres.

“It is abundantly clear that this was a clean hockey hit,” Wilson said in a statement. “As noted by the NHL, Raffi’s initial point of contact was a shoulder-to-shoulder hit on an opponent who was playing the puck. He did not leave his feet or elevate, he kept his shoulder tucked and elbow down at his side, and he was gliding — not skating or charging.”

The team had no comment Saturday about the fine.

It is the fourth career suspension for Torres, who is considered a repeat offender in dangerous hits under the league’s collective bargaining agreement.

Stoll was bent forward while trying to play a bouncing puck when Torres approached him from the side for a violent hit in Game 1 on Tuesday night. Stoll’s head snapped back violently before he fell forward onto the ice. Stoll missed Game 2 and did not make the trip to San Jose for Saturday’s game. There is no timetable for his return.

In an explanatory video released by Brendan Shanahan, the NHL’s senior vice-president of player safety, he said Stoll’s head was “the principal point of contact” in the hit, creating grounds for suspension. Although Torres initially made contact with Stoll’s right shoulder, Shanahan ruled that the shoulder hit was only a glancing blow, as evidenced by the direction both players travelled after the contact.

Wilson said the head must be targeted to violate Rule 48.1 and there is no evidence that Torres targeted Stoll’s head. Wilson also said Stoll put himself in a vulnerable position just before the hit to play a bouncing puck.

“It appears that the NHL has not only made an inappropriate application of this rule but is trying to make an example out of a player who is being judged on past events, one who has changed his game dramatically this season and taken only six minor penalties in 39 games,” Wilson said.

While playing for Phoenix last season, Torres received a 21-game suspension — initially 25 games — for a high hit on Chicago star Marian Hossa in the first round of the playoffs. Torres was suspended for two games in January 2012 for charging Minnesota defenceman Nate Prosser, and he sat out four games in April 2011 for a hit to the head of Edmonton’s Jordan Eberle while playing for Vancouver.

The Sharks acquired Torres from Phoenix just before the trading deadline and he provided an immediate spark in helping the team make the playoffs and sweep Vancouver in the first round. Torres scored in overtime in Game 2 against the Canucks.

San Jose was expected to get a boost to the lineup Saturday with the return of injured forward Marty Havlat, who has been sidelined since leaving Game 1 in the first round because of a lower-body injury. Havlat told the coaching staff after the morning skate he was ready to play and coach Todd McLellan said he would get Havlat back in the lineup. Havlat has 21 goals and 31 assists in 73 career playoff games.

CHICAGO – In case they weren’t aware already, the Chicago Blackhawks now know they’re going to have to earn it if they want to get past Detroit.

The Red Wings hammered home that message on Saturday.

Damien Brunner and Brendan Smith scored in the second period and Detroit beat the Blackhawks 4-1 in Game 2 to even their Western Conference semifinal series.

It was a strong response by the Red Wings after Chicago handled them easily in the series opener, 4-1.

“We’ve got a real good club now,” Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. “And we haven’t been good all year. We’ve just gotten better.”

Their confidence got a big jolt after they knocked off the Presidents’ Trophy winners and avoided falling into a deep hole. It was another big win by a team that finished seventh in the conference, only to knock off second-seeded Anaheim in the first round.

Now, they’re even with a team that’s been rolling along all season and is eyeing its second Stanley Cup in four years.

“Both teams would be stupid if they thought they were going to come in here and either team win four straight,” Chicago’s Brent Seabrook said.

Just as the Blackhawks did in Game 1, Detroit took control in the second period and put the game away in the third. Now, the Red Wings have a chance to take the lead when this series between Original Six rivals shifts to Detroit for Game 3 on Monday.

“Overall, I think we had more energy,” the Red Wings’ Henrik Zetterberg said. “We did a lot of the little things better than we did in Game 1 and when we got our chances we were able to put the puck in the net.”

Patrick Kane gave Chicago a 1-0 lead late in the first, but did things ever change after that.

Brunner tied it when he deflected a wrist shot by Jakub Kindl early in the second, and Smith gave the Red Wings the lead when he scored off a feed from Zetterberg on a 3-on-1 late in the second.

Johan Franzen made it 3-1 in the third when he fired a rising shot past Crawford after a perfect pass from Jonathan Ericsson in the Detroit zone. And Valtteri Filppula closed out the scoring with 7:57 left in the game.

That was enough for Jimmy Howard, who stopped 19 shots.

Crawford made 26 saves for Chicago and played well at times even though things got out of hand down the stretch. When it was over, coach Joel Quenneville insisted his faith in his goalie hasn’t wavered.

“Not at all,” he said. “Across the board, we should all assume responsibility.”

The Red Wings were simply a step faster and were more physical in this one after the Blackhawks ran away from them in the opener.

“I think just by taking care of our own end first, making good plays, you end up playing a faster game that way,” Smith said. “By taking away their speed, it helps out ours. You want to get a lot of contact on these types of teams, and it works out for us.”

The Blackhawks still struck first thanks to a lucky bounce after Detroit’s Kyle Quincey sprawled out to block a pass across the slot by Patrick Sharp that was intended for Kane on a 2-on-1 rush. The puck bounced to a trailing Michal Handzus, who immediately fed it to a wide open Kane in the right slot. He fired it into the net at the 14:05 mark for a 1-0 lead and his first goal of the playoffs.

About a minute later, with the Red Wings on a power play, Crawford made a nice save on Zetterberg before Pavel Datsyuk ripped a shot high off the right post.

Detroit tied it early in the second when a wrist shot by Kindl from just inside the blue line deflected off Brunner and past a screened Crawford, who didn’t even react as the puck went past him on the glove side.

But Chicago’s goalie had the fans chanting his name midway through the period with two great saves, stopping Zetterberg from the slot and sprawling out to foil Daniel Cleary on the rebound.

The Red Wings took a 2-1 lead with 3:52 left in the second after Chicago’s Niklas Hjalmarsson fell racing Zetterberg for a loose puck. Zetterberg then dished to Smith on a 2-on-1 rush for the go-ahead goal.

“He creates a lot of stuff, sometimes for both teams,” Zetterberg said in a nod to Smith’s struggles in Game 1.

There weren’t many mistakes by the Red Wings in this one. Other than Kane’s goal, they contained the Blackhawks’ stars and made it look easy over the final two periods.

“They kind of used our own style against us as far as holding onto the puck and keeping it away from us,” Kane said.

NOTES: LW Drew Miller was in the Red Wings’ lineup for the first time since April 20. He had been sidelined by a broken bone in his right hand. … F Viktor Stalberg was a healthy scratch for the Blackhawks, just as he was in Game 1. “I don’t like changing too much, but we wanted to get (Dave Bolland) in our lineup,” Quenneville said before the game. “It’s comparable to what we’ve done during season. But we’ll see. We can adapt and change at any moment.” … Quenneville on the early start: “I think the guys, once they get in, they don’t mind playing in the afternoon.”

The Vancouver Humane Society is against individual events at the Cloverdale Rodeo calling them an "explicit spectacle of animal cruelty."

SURREY (NEWS1130) – It’s an annual tradition in Cloverdale that has animal rights activists angry. The Vancouver Humane Society is opposed to the rodeo which takes place this weekend.
“We’d like to the see the animals in the rodeo not used at all. The bucking events are very frightening for the animals. They expose the animals to fear and stress, all for the sake of entertainment,” says the society’s Debra Probert.

She calls the event an “explicit spectacle of cruelty” which should get spectators thinking.
“We think that people going to the rodeo should ask themselves two questions. Do they think kindness to animals is an important value, and do they think what happens at a rodeo is consistent with that value?”

She admits the Cloverdale Rodeo has come a long way, in that it dropped roping events back in 2007 but she says more work needs to be done. And when comparing other competitions around the province, she says this exhibition gets a better grade.

The Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair ends May 20.
