VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - We're continuing our series surrounding a controversial new treatment for Multiple Sclerosis, called CCSVI or "liberation therapy."
Naysayers are adamant it's "invasive" and "risky," while others say it may be a ground-breaking cure for a horrible and destructive disease.
The idea is that MS is caused by a lack of blood flow, and opening up the veins can correct the problem. The treatment isn't available in Canada, with both the federal government and the MS Society of Canada saying it could be hazardous.
However, Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff says it's worth exploring, but says it's not the job of the government to give people with MS false hope. False hope or not, many Canadians who suffer from the disease have raised their own money to travel to countries like India and Mexico to get the procedure. They say they're holding out hope Canada will offer the treatment soon.
