Protesters say South Fraser Perimeter Road is way to nowhere

Insist it's not too late to stop the project

SURREY (NEWS1130) - Climate activists say they want the province to know it's not too late to stop the South Fraser Perimeter Road from being built through Surrey. Ralliers marched through the Bridgeview neighborhood on Sunday as part of a global day for climate change action.

Protesters like Ben West say it's a matter of trust. "Hearing all these promises from the government that we're going to do something to address climate change. Yet, we're seeing this completely hypocritical investment in highways and more development that is just going to make things worse."

They say the four-lane road is a perfect example. "Going right over farmland, destroying communities. The road is not needed, and we need to stop [it]."

Protesters filled hundreds of bags with sand used in the project to build up a dike along the road to show water levels from global warming should be a bigger concern.

The freeway was originally planned with interchanges, but will now be controlled by traffic lights.
