VICTORIA (NEWS1130) - A Victoria man accused of beating a three-month-old pit bull puppy to death on New Year's Day has pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering of an animal.

Brent Malcolm Connors will be sentenced next month.

Marcie Moriarty with the BC SPCA says this case has really struck a chord with people. "I think that any time a puppy is involved, it is just the epitome of innocent."

Dozens of protesters were in the courtroom for today's hearing.

Moriarty says it's a disturbing case. "Extremely trusting little puppy that met such a horrid ending, and I think anybody who has any sort of heart would think this kind of behavior is horrific."

Connors will be sentenced on February 2nd.
