VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - She went from being a borderline hoarder to living free on the open road.
Rae Crothers is a brave woman, giving up a secure job and traditional lifestyle in Ottawa for "Miranda," a 30 foot RV, whose siren song seduced her from her tied-down life. "I didn't want to be one of those people who reaches middle age and has a whole bunch of regrets. I had a guaranteed future and it was going to be very easy, but it wasn't very fulfilling and it wasn't very satisfying."
A few years ago, at the age of 29, she de-cluttered and started life and freelance work on the road with no regrets. She says you can do it, too. "I won't say it's going to be easy at first because you're going to have to figure out the best way to support yourself on the road and it might take time. But eventually, if you work a plan like I've been doing, it's going to start paying off over time."
Not everyone approves. "There's always the odd person who thinks that I have no business being on the road and I'm young and naive but generally, people are very positive and a lot of the older RVers say they wish they'd been smart enough to do it at my age," Crothers says.
Crothers has become something of a folk hero for her followers. "I didn't quite set out to do that, but I notice there's a lot of people my age who have the same feelings of being choked, trying to live the 'Canadian Dream'.. They don't realize there are other options and those other options are equally valid life paths."
Her blog "
Travels with Miranda" has a devoted following and she's written an ebook on how to live the RV lifestyle.
Crothers and Miranda are at the
Early Bird RV Show at the Tradex in Abbotsford starting today.
