VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Metro Vancouver has a serious problem when it comes to electric spot danger, according to a company hired to run tests.
Tom Catanese is president of Power Supply Company and says aging infrastructure is to blame.
"It's an infrastructure issue and as the infrastructure continues to age and taking a beating from elements and the weather, we find more and more instances and more problems."
He adds there are at least 100 danger sites in the region, a risk to people and pets walking near old wiring, lamp standards, and manhole covers. "Relative to some cities we've done work in there are some significant problems."
The company is using a specialized truck to detect stray voltage.
Metro Vancouver Board Chair Lois Jackson hopes to share the data with local mayors. "There are 22 of us, and there could be different degrees of magnitude around the Lower Mainland."
Power Supply Company has seen success around North America. Last month a dog was shocked at Vancouver's Woodland Park. There have been similar cases in Toronto and throughout the States.
The company was hired by a woman who claims to be a stray voltage victim, and also labels herself an animal advocate.
