Report: Gender matters when buying a home

Women more conservative than men

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Are homebuyers looking for brand-new buys?  Or, are fixer-uppers the way to go?  According to the 2011 TD Canada Trust Home Buyers Report that decision may depend on your gender.

Mobile Mortgage Specialist Barry Rathburn says some people just don't want to take a chance.  "I found women tend to be more conservative than men... less willing to take a risk.  Most men are renovators at heart; they can see where they can change things to make a lifestyle situation out of the house."

He explains women want security when it comes to buying a home.  "They want to be sure that their house has the right balance of features, cost and lifestyle that they can count on."

One thing Rathburn says everyone can agree on is the price.  Ninety-seven per cent of Canadians say cost is the most important consideration when buying a home, especially here in BC.

"I've come to the conclusion that if you are not comfortable with your mortgage, you are not going to be comfortable with your house."

Between 93 and 97 per cent of Canadians responded the size of the home, a safe neighbourhood are also the most important factors.
